Why Prenatal Pilates is the perfect exercise to prepare you for birth and beyond.

Best to not start something totally new when pregnant but this is a fantastic way to

continue to work out in a safe, impactful and controlled way. It can be a common

misconception that women need to take it super easy when pregnant. And whilst

there are certain exercises and movements you shouldn’t do whilst pregnant (i.e

isometric exercises such as planks) there are so many wonderful movements you

can do that will be incredibly beneficial to you and your baby in your pregnancy

journey.

If you are dealing with sickness, or any other complications with your pregnancy you

will want to have sign off to exercise but Prenatal Pilates is a fantastic low impact

class that not only includes lots of functional movements, but strength work,

mobilisation and essential birth prep such as breathwork and pelvic floor exercises.

We are always looking to practise Pilates in a safe and controlled way but as your

body is adapting and changing day by day your prenatal Pilates practice should

adapt too. Did you know that in the second trimester your body will start to produce

relaxin ? Relaxin is a hormone that your body produces to allow your muscles, joints

and ligaments to loosen, essentially making way for your growing baby and

preparing your body for birth. In regard to keeping the movements safe, we will learn

to how to stabilise and keep movements at a safe range to ensure you don’t

overextend as it can be easier to.

Remember, if you are ever experiencing pelvic girdle pain or any other issues during

your pregnancy it is always best to chat with your clinician. We are all different, so it

is always encouraged to practice intuition and listen to your body. I’ve taught women

right up until their due date so all being well, you can too!

Reps and movements are really important to keep all those fluids moving and help

strengthen the body but as you progress more and more in your pregnancy, let go of

any expectations or judgements of yourself, and do what feels good.
